promotion to that rank. (With the permission of the Inspector General of Police, Hindustani may be substituted for Chinese.)

12. Officers in Charge of Stations may be required to perform, in addition to their police duties, duties for other Departments without extra remuneration.

13. Officers are provided with free quarters, fuel and light; (the consumption of which is regulated according to Department Orders).

The following are provided free:-

Beds and bedding, summer and winter uniform, great coats and boots or money ($24 per annum) in lieu of boots.

Men engaged on the Detective Staff receive an allowance of $12 per month in lieu of uniform.

16. An officer on joining is provided with table linen, cutlery, glass, crockery ware, and cooking utensils for the sum of $5.

17. Special rules, approved by the Governor in Council, govern sick leave, medical attendance and hospital charges. An officer is provided with free medical attendance. No stoppages of any kind are made from an officer's pay for absence from duty on account of injury or sickness received or incurred in the performance of duty.

If he is confined to hospital through sickness from climatic or ordinary causes, the following stoppages are made in respect of his maintenance whilst in hospital:-

When the sickness of a subordinate officer or constable is caused by intemperance or is certified by a Government Medical Officer to be due to venereal disease which has become aggravated by concealment, or to sickness or injury which is purposely self-inflicted, he shall be provided with medical attendance, medical comforts, diet and accommodation, but his pay shall be stopped for so long as he is abscnt from duty.
